Are webzines respectable ways to break into the writing world?
Q. I ask because I'm an unpublished writer who wants to build up a bit of a portfolio. I'm half finished with my first novel and have a few short story ideas that I'm going to start writing this week. I've been looking online for magazines that are accepting short story submissions, and have found a lot of e-zines. The last time I was interested in the short story market was a couple of years ago, and back then it was kind of laughed at to have your story published online. Is that still the case? My preference is still old-fashioned print, but I'm willing to be open-minded, as long as it will look good on my writing resume. A. I would be very careful publishing anything online if I were you. The internet is a vastly huge place, and growing larger everyday; despite copyright laws, many writers still have their works plaguerized and stolen. As a result of this, most publishing companies find it irksome to deal with works first published online; it's too much of a hassle for them to hunt it down and see if it has been used by anyone else. Take caution in publishing online.

getting paid to write articles/ Freelance writing?
Q. I am a college student and I am interested in writing articles. I have registered in a few sites but they only pay for a minimum number of page views that the article gets. I would like to write for real life magazines or for e-zines. I am very new to this system and I don't quite know where to start! The internet is quite vast and I have seen about a hundred such sites! I am afraid to write for spam magazines. I want something credible and knowing that I am not just writing in vain. Above all, I want to get paid too. Impossible dream?? Does anyone know where I can make a good beginning, no matter what country I am living in? Thank you for your help.

A. The essence of writing freelance is good writing. That and knowing your audience. The next trick is to take either the same article, or the same pool of information, and re-hash it for different audiences and markets, e.g. You write a travel piece and submit it to--- 1. a men's magazine. rave about the great drinks, nightspots, hot action and babes. Plenty of babe shots. 2. a travel magazine. examine your planning, packing, local customs, drinking restrictions (it's a Muslim nation), flight times, transfer issues, quality of accommodation. Pics of hotel and bedroom, venues.
