A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication containing news, information, and advertising. By 2007 there were 6580 daily newspapers in the world (including 1456 in the U.S.) selling 395 million copies a day (55 million in the U.S). The worldwide recession of 2008, combined with the rapid growth of web-based alternatives, caused a serious decline in advertising and circulation, as many papers closed or sharply retrenched operations.

General-interest newspapers typically publish stories on local and national political events and personalities, crime, business, entertainment, society and sports. Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing editorials written by an editor and columns that express the personal opinions of writers. Other features include display and classified advertising, comics, and inserts from local merchants.

The newspaper is typically funded by paid subscriptions and advertising.

A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism, persuasion and op-eds; obituaries; entertainment features such as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes; weather news and forecasts; advice, food and other columns; reviews of movies, plays and restaurants; classified ads; display ads, editorial cartoons and comic strips.

  • Publicity: Its contents are reasonably accessible to the public.

  • Universality: It covers a range of topics.

Any Ideas to get local newspapers to cover local charity work - Before Christmas?
Q. Its fine that the Salvation Army is in the news every week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But our 20 year old charity helps the Homeless. I would Love to see us in the News, at least twice before Christmas. Press Releases does not work. Reporters say they are TOO Busy with Other Stuff to cover our important work of our non-profit. Any Idea What to do, to get newspapers or Broadcast coverage?

A. You dont say where you live. Most small local newspapers will cover these type of things. Contact your local radio or t.v. station ASAP .May also try contacting the local LIONS or Rotary clubs in your area. They will help you.

Where in Liverpool can I find international newspapers?
Q. I'd like to collect, or have delivered, some newspapers in other languages. However, when I search online I can only find places that deliver to London or Edinburgh. Does anyone know of a specialist newsagent in Liverpool that sells foreign newspapers? Or do they sell them at one of Liverpool's airports, maybe? Thanks in advance!

A. Erm I think the streets called Mount Pleasant (near the wigwam/at the bottom of that street) there's a newsagents there and I once bought a japanese newspaper there (not sure if they still do asian newspapers) but they very def still sell a lot arabic (and maybe turkish) language newspapers, good luck - if they haven't got what you're looking for ask them, they might know and they're friendly enough there (If you're looking for chinese try the chinese supermarket near the gates - I think that's called hope street...)

When should I go to newspapers over massive case of abuse to a vulnerable adult?
Q. I have been helping my friend fight a massive case of all types of abuse,to a 36year old man (my friends son) with learning difficulties. Police, Social Services and other relevant organizations are doing nothing. Much of this case is proven by an independent investigator taken on by the Amateur Swimming Association, (this involves 2 swimming coaches), and much of the abuse has been admitted. To get justice for this man we feel it has to come out in the newspapers but we don't know if this is the right time, or should we keep waiting for the other organisations that appear to be doing nothing? This has been going on for 3 years and can't go on for much longer as it is killing my friend.Thank you to anyone that can help.

A. NOW would be a good time. It should not have gone on that long in the first place. You so called friends are just as guilty for this abuse!! Why hasn't somebody kick the coaches a**es by now?? Friends don't let friends get abused. My brother and I one summer in high school kicked these other two that were brothers a**es all summer long because they would not leave this kid alone. I guess I was raised different. good luck and at least remove your friend from the situation, at least do that much..
