From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia). The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Geo-politically, the West Indies are usually regarded as a sub-region of North America and are organized into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies. The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Does anyone know of a good Caribbean/West Indian cookbook which features traditional recipes? Q. I'm looking for a cookbok that has recipes like gauva cheese, nankatai, tamarind balls, ras gulla, ras malai, peera, goja, cheese rolls, cheese pie, currant roll, salara, beef patty, etc. Too many so-called caribbean/west indian cookbooks feature tourist type food and not REAL caribbean food. Please help me find a good cookbook. By the way, I have family in Grenada and Trinidad( so I don't mind buying a Trini book if it has what I'm looking for. Thanks. The Caribbean is pretty much a large destination, with many choices like do you prefer English/Spanish flavor like Dominican Rep which is a great place to visit with amny options,my advice to you is to research were you want to go,do see shop and etc; Pricing also plays out big,so doing research on were you'll get good bargain which should be taken into consideration. Hotels,by far Sandals stand out on top, this chain of hotels has been voted best 13 years in a row, in the world for All inclusive and brand and also for eco-environment reasons, and its the largest chain of hotel in the region. If you need to do research do it on the these islands. But what do you want?
