Education in its broadest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character, or physical ability of an individual (e.g., the consciousness of an infant is educated by its environment through its interaction with its environment); and in its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, values, and skills from one generation to another through institutions. Teachers in such institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This technical process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the compulsory education of youth. For example, Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis, Teachers in specialized professions such as astrophysics, law, or zoology may teach only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also instruction in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, e.g., at museums and libraries, with the Internet, and in life experience. The right to education has been described as a basic human right: since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is your philosophy of higher education? Q. I am trying to write a paper for one of my classes, and am having a hard time finding information on the topic. Our prof wants us to get others philosophies of higher education and evaluate them and come up with our own. However, when I search "philosophy of higher education" all I get is info on PhD programs! So, if you are a higher ed administrator or an educator, what is your philosophy of higher education, or what is your college's philosophy? Also if you have any tips on where to find this information, or better ways to search, please let me know! Thanks for your help! Asked by JayB - Wed Sep 5 10:57:31 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. One reason why you may not be finding anything specifically on this topic is because it is subjective and interpretive. My opinion is that higher education is fine if it has a practical application. For instance, practicing law or becoming a doctor but there are many other professions where this could hamper the individual. From a professional aspect, the worst Engineers I have ever had on my staff or worked with me are PhD's. Their minds are developed in such an analytical manner that they become dysfunctional. Also, this is compounded by people who achieve degrees all in the same field i.e. engineering. I think it is great from a science perspective but from management or operatability it is useless. I would rather see an… [cont.] Answered by thehazmater - Wed Sep 5 11:14:51 2007 Is our education system failing the country or are the people simply failing themselves? Q. Go spend a day in the life of a teacher. There is very little funding and support. They can bring the education to the student, but the individual moral and personal beliefs will dictate what they do with the information. We have legislated the teachers ability to influences personal belief out of the class room, so who is to blame for the failure of education? Asked by YourLaHire - Mon Jun 29 12:02:47 2009 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments A. People send their kids off glad to get rid of them for the day expecting teachers to just saw off the top of their heads and program their brains magically. They don't want to work for their education, they want it handed down like the rest of the free stuff that they get. Teachers are not allowed to hold students back a grade anymore (or at least it takes an act of congress or something.) because it makes the school look bad. They cannot reward the better performing students. We have to keep the violent and disruptive kids in school because it is their "right" to an education. I say: flush public education. Cut the school taxes (probably have to cut some other things in there too, but work it out people) so that people can pay… [cont.] Answered by The Murphyologist - Mon Jun 29 12:11:17 2009 What education do you need to become a horse vet?
