Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, People's Republic of China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters which make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes identified as the "Land of the Rising Sun". Japan comprises 6,852 islands making it an archipelago. The four largest islands are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of Japan's land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world's tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. Archaeological research indicates that people were living on the islands of Japan as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan begins with brief appearances in Chinese history texts from the first century A.D. Influence from the outside world followed by long periods of isolation has characterized Japan's history. Since adopting its constitution in 1947, Japan has maintained a unitary constitutional monarchy with an emperor and an elected parliament, the Diet. A major economic power, Japan has the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP and the third largest in purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth largest exporter and sixth largest importer. It is a developed country with high living standards (8th highest HDI). Japan has the highest life expectancy of any country in the world (according to both UN and WHO estimates). From Wikipedia under the

My fiance and I are moving to Japan soon and we would like to adopt a Japanese child since we are unable to have children. I can't seem to find any information regarding how long you must live in Japan in order to begin the adoption process. They do. I've heard it was difficult, however. Asked by unknown - Mon Apr 20 01:52:05 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. adaption is extremely difficult in Japan. They are children who are adapted, but it's mostly done among family such as uncle adapt nephew...If you are not Japanese, and completely unrelated to the child, it's not likely you can adapt Japanese children. Japan is one of the few country in the world which population is decreasing. The government is encouraging young people to have more children, and they even pay for couples to have children. I'm sorry to say it's not likely for American couple to be able to adapt Japanese children. Unlike Japan, Chinese or Korean children are much easier to adapt. Or you might want to find Asian children for adaption in U.S. You have much better chance of finding Japanese children for adaption that way since… [cont.] Answered by indigolizard - Wed Apr 22 23:17:50 2009 What is the cheapest university in japan to do a degree in? Its really hard in Japanese universites to get accepted if your a foreigner unless the school is into language studies and/or you can speak very good Japanese. Temple University @ Japan teaches some courses in English and is pretty easy to get accepted to, as it goes through Temple in the U.S. Japan isn't cheap, unfortunately.
