How is the amtrax service between Austin and Dallas?
Q. I need to keep travelling between austin and dallas everyweek - usually monday to thursday. Appreciate any feedback on this: How is the Amtrak service between Austin & Dallas ? Is it safe, how are the fellow passengers ? Do you get to buy and eat any snacks/drinks ? How comfortable are the seats for the long journey ? Are there any power points where i can plug my laptop ?
Asked by easyguy2010 - Fri Nov 7 23:06:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have rode the Amtrak train from Dallas to Austin and I really enjoyed it. But it took about 8 hours so it's rather time-consuming. I don't know about riding it almost everyday, though, like you are describing. I think that would get pretty expensive. Yes, I think it's very safe. It wasn't very crowded at all and I enjoyed meeting the other passengers or I could just keep quiet and to myself if I wanted to. You can get up and walk around from car to car and there is a snack car where you can buy snacks and beverages. It is comfortable and the restrooms on board are very clean and decent. I didn't have a laptop at the time, but I bet they do have power points. Not sure about that. All in all, I thought it was a great way to travel. [cont.]

Is Austin Texas a good place to live and start a career?
Q. I will be graduating college next May and my boyfriend and I have really been considering moving to Austin, Texas. We were just wondering what it's like there. We currently live in a rather large college town, and know that Austin is also a college town, but we're looking to live somewhere with a bigger mix of people. Not just college aged students.

A. Austin is definately more than a college town; having the state government and the hi-tech industry in town sees to that. The main problem with Austin is jobs though. Because Austin has a reputation as a beautiful place to live and lots of UT grads never leave; the job market can be very tough.

What is the best housing for a couple going to college in Austin?
Q. My girlfriend and I who are graduating high school soon (but we've been in a serious relationship for years now) are planning on moving to Austin together. I'm going to attend UT and she'll attend Austin Community College. I have been to Austin very few times and I'm not used to big cities at all. We don't need much; perhaps efficiency housing or something like that. Does anyone have any useful information on housing in Austin in general, expected price ranges, etc.? Anything's useful.

A. This is a little tricky because convenience wise it would be better for you to live around campus and your girlfriend to live closer to ACC (riverside). I believe your best option would be to live closer to UT because the area is much nicer and more university friendly. If you look hard enough (try craigslist) you can find great deals close to the university.

I am planning to move to Austin, TX, and I wonder what part of the city is best to move into? Recommendations?
Q. In a little while I'd be out of the service and planning to move to Austin, TX. I have never been there (I used to live in Dallas, TX though) and I do not have friends in that city either. It's going to be a new experience for me. I need some recommendations of good neighborhoods in the city to move into. I'm planning to rent an apartment and I have my own transportation.

A. It depends on what you're used to and what sort of lifestyle that you're looking for. I love South Austin. It's close to downtown, and has all sorts of funky and eclectic shops and restaurants. North Austin and Northwest Austin are more modern, and probably have a wider array of apartments and complexes in different price tiers. The apartments in these areas might be good for you, as many are geared toward young single students and professionals. Some activities include poolside BBQ's and parties so that you can get to know your neighbors. Check out an online apartment locationg site, or www.austinchronicle.com You can tour apartments and areas virtually, and get a sense of what it's going to cost before you ever set foot in town. … [cont.]

Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin or John Cena who is the most important wrestler in history?
Q. I'll make a case for each. Hulk Hogan: the most recognizable wrestler in history. Would the WWE have become as popular in the 80's without him? Would the WWE still be around today? Not only that, but he revolutionized wrestling by forming the nWo and taking WCW to new heights. Is he the most important wrestler in history? Steve Austin: Without Austin, would the WWE had survived when WCW was breathing down their necks? Although the nWo opened the door in the mid 90's it was Austin who kicked it in, breaking merchandise sales records for wrestling (unsurpassed by either Hogan or Cena) worldwide while ushering in the Attitude Era. A. While Austin does have public transportation and is one of the more bike-friendly communities in the country. Much of the town would still be difficult with no car. The only place I would be comfortable without a car is downtown. It can be very expensive but is as walkable as you can hope for. If you are willing to live near the UT campus you can do pretty well without a car as well. The only other option I might recommend is some of the Hyde Park area. It is north of the campus, and some areas are more walkable than others. The only other thing I could recommend is using this apartment map website. Then you could put the address into and see how highly a certain complex scores on walkability. Good Luck.

Is it Possible to go to School in Austin or Phoenix without a Car?
Q. I'm not going to be able to take my car with me when I transfer out of state from Richmond,Virginia. I am looking at schools out of state and would like to work, live and go to school in either downtown Phoenix, Arizona or Austin, Texas. Is it possible to live without a car in either cities and still have a fun life. A lot of college students here in Richmond don't have cars so they have to make friends with people with cars, and/or only work, play and live downtown. Also in Richmond there are lots of jobs, and leisure activities downtown and we are a city of only over 200,000. A. Phoenix has a GREAT public transit system. I went to college there with no car and it was a breeze. There is a bus for every major street and lots of minor ones too. There are plenty of express routes as well and now they also have a light rail. You can get a monthly bus pass for cheap and they're pretty darn reliable time-wise. Because of all the colleges in the area, there are also a lot of starter jobs for college students. You also need to keep in mind that the transit system stretches to Tempe as well so it's not like it keeps you stuck within Metro Phoenix. Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Peoria, etc are all easily reachable via public transport. Public transport is never a 100% clean or creepy people free experience, but compared to… [cont.]
