A bomb is any of a range of explosive devices that only rely on the exothermic chemical reaction of an explosive material to provide an extremely sudden and violent release of explosion. Detonations inflict damage principally through ground- and atmosphere-transmitted mechanical stress, the impact and penetration of pressure-driven projectiles, pressure damage, and explosion-generated effects. The word comes from the Greek word βόμβος (bombos), an onomatopoetic term with approximately the same meaning as "boom" in English. A nuclear weapon employs chemical-based explosives to initiate a much larger nuclear-based explosion. The term "bomb" is not usually applied to explosive devices used for civilian purposes such as construction or mining, although the people using the devices may sometimes refer to them as bombs. The military use of the term "bomb", or more specifically aerial bomb action, typically refers to airdropped, unpowered explosive weapons most commonly used by air forces and naval aviation. Other military or terrorist way explosive weapons not classified as "bombs" include grenades, shells, depth charges (used in water), warheads when in missiles or land mines. In unconventional warfare, "bomb" can refer to any of a limitless range for offensive weaponry. For instance in the recent Iraq conflicts, "bombs" known as IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices have been employed by insurgent fighters to great effectiveness. From Wikipedia under the

The A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima was a yield of 13 kilotons (kt) (not megatons), & destroyed an area of 1 mile. A 1 megaton (mt) thermonuclear bomb can cause damage out to 7.5 miles. A 25 mt. bomb can cause damage out to 30 miles. Check Wikipedia for info on the Tsar Bomb. built bu the Soviet Union. Yield 50 mt.. Answered by Robert Hawkins - Tue Apr 15 06:02:51 2008 To build the atom bomb we built all kinds of power plants, like Oakridge. How did russia do it without plants?
Q. I guess someone could say the building of the plants had nothing to do with building bomb. We are talking 1947 or so when the Russians, using plans stolen from that place in New Mexico, exploded their bomb. My question is: I read that "it took half of the US electrical power" to build the bomb. But in 1947 Russia didn't have anything like our electrical power, so did we need that power? My source is one of those Rhode's books on making the a bomb. Asked by skylark042000 - Tue Feb 19 13:19:11 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Soviets STOLE the idea from us. Remember the Rosenbergs? It was they who STOLE the plans and gave them to Soviet agents back in the late '40s.
