What's a good proposal for a science investigatory project (chemistry)?
Q. I'm in third year high school. And our group's project for this semester is a science investigatory project. Since we're in third year, there should be an application of chemistry. What do you suggest is a good one? We want to consider the availability of materials, if it consumes a lot of time, etc. Thanks in advance!

A. A project that undergraduate chemistry students often do is titration of acidic (or basic) commercial products, like orange juice or cola, to quantify how acidic each brand is and compare them. Since vitamin C is an acid, you can use titration to quantify Vitamin C levels. There are a bunch of ideas here, too:

A. What do you mean? Are you looking for a science fair project? A PhD. project? A project I liked was finding a use for corn cobs. Another project I liked was how to enrich deuterium in water. Do you have instrumentation such as NMR and MS? One kid I met built his own MS and designed a recycle apparatus to enrich deuterium.

A. Have you learnt electrolysis? If you have, you should know electroplating then. Then maybe you can investigate on how to coat an orchid in gold. What i have in mind is: Normally, people would think of coating an object with a substance, is similar to chocolate coated strawberries. I.E. Melt the substance, and dip the object in the melted substance to get the object coated in the substance. However, for orchid, you cannot dip it in molten gold, as the melting point of gold is 1500 degree centigrade, while the combustion point of orchid is much much lower than 1500 degree centigrade. So, this is where electroplating comes into place. You can consider this as your investigatory project. But I'm not sure if you can say that it's simple. Hope… [cont.]

A. Making local biodiesel will put the gas companies in ahuge world of hurt. That is the only reason it's not catching on. Show how easy it is to make at home. Anybody can make biodiesel. It's easy, you can make it in your kitchen -- and it's BETTER than the petro-diesel fuel the big oil companies sell you. Your diesel motor will run better and last longer on your home-made fuel, and it's much cleaner -- better for the environment and better for health. If you make it from used cooking oil it's not only cheap but you'll be recycling a troublesome waste product. Best of all is the GREAT feeling of freedom, independence and empowerment it will give you. Here's how to do it -- everything you need to know.

A. I am going to assume by the vagueness of your question that you are either a high school of eighth grader. Here is one for you. Scientific question; Does air have weight? Get a balance scale that is accurate to one tenth of a gram. Get a balloon and inflate it to the maximum possible. Weigh the balloon. Pop the balloon and weigh the popped balloon. The difference in weight from the fully inflated balloon and the popped one is the weight of the air. Further experimentation; What is the weght per volume. Find the volume of the balloon. If it is spherical enough measure the diameter and find the volume using the equation; Volume= 4/3 pi r^3 Another way is to have a huge graduated cylinder. Fill it up enough so you can stick the… [cont.]
