A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication containing news, information, and advertising. By 2007 there were 6580 daily newspapers in the world (including 1456 in the U.S.) selling 395 million copies a day (55 million in the U.S). The worldwide recession of 2008, combined with the rapid growth of web-based alternatives, caused a serious decline in advertising and circulation, as many papers closed or sharply retrenched operations.

General-interest newspapers typically publish stories on local and national political events and personalities, crime, business, entertainment, society and sports. Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing editorials written by an editor and columns that express the personal opinions of writers. Other features include display and classified advertising, comics, and inserts from local merchants.

The newspaper is typically funded by paid subscriptions and advertising.

A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism, persuasion and op-eds; obituaries; entertainment features such as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes; weather news and forecasts; advice, food and other columns; reviews of movies, plays and restaurants; classified ads; display ads, editorial cartoons and comic strips.

Definition

Newspapers typically meet four criteria:

  • Publicity: Its contents are reasonably accessible to the public.
  • Periodicity: It is published at regular intervals.
  • Currency: Its information is up to date.
  • Universality: It covers a range of topics.

How do I go about selling old newspapers?
Q. I have a box full of old newspapers: 1 is a special Edition memphis press about Elvis Presley dieing dated 8-17-1977, another is about President roosevelt dieing dated 4-13-45, these are just a few. I want to get the most from them. What internet sites can I go to for selling these at the highest price. I have already been to Ebay and I don't think that will get me the highest price.

A. You could register for a dot-com, that would save the eBay listing fees and then some. You can get a domain name for under $10 and include the URL as a tag on message boards having to do with these topics. Just be careful and do it tastefully, otherwise you may get banned for spamming. Take photos with a good digital camera (a digital SLR would probably work best if you know how to use them...)

Newspapers are cutting staff and relying on citizen journalists. What do you think about this?
Q. Newspapers are dying every year from loss of circulation and loss of advertising. So they are using free copy from local citizens. What do you think of this trend?

A. Bad Idea! Journalist are (allegedly) trained to report without personal predjudice. Many do achieve this. Using personal film footage has always been done, however when you start relying on the average citizen to report on 'news' then I think you are going to get a lot of "unskilled labor" and the results will be ameturish.
