What other variations could be measured in bean seeds besides spots and length?
Q. I measured the lenght of a pinto bean and counted the spots. Are there any other variations that can be found?
Asked by rhodalumpkin - Wed Nov 4 05:27:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could measure the weight and create an index using that and the length. You could then plant them and measure growth rate, leaf emergence rate, leaf size, time until flowering, fruitset. Relate these things back to your bean measurements. You might be able to discover if bean attributes affect growth.

Q. Just as the question asked. What is the relationship between variations and adaptations? Please help! Answer quickly! Thanks in advance!
Asked by sparrowchelsea - Tue Oct 27 22:12:36 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Variation would be like differences between two things (like a variation in two animals' features). An adaptation is basically a feature to make things easier in a specific environment. Basically, adaptations are different kinds of variations

Using calculus of variations, how does one plan the trajectory of a spacecraft?
Q. I'm writing a math extended essay for IB, and I need to do research involving how calculus of variations can be applied to the trajectory of a space craft. Any tips on where I should start?
Asked by Ryan - Sat Aug 22 15:27:41 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The calculus of variations involves solving integral equations for unknown functions under the integral sign given certain conditions or constraints. The types of integrals are classified according to "kind," with integral equations of the First kind having the unknown function only under the integral sign, and Second and Third kind equations having the unknown function both inside and outside the integral, and are usually conceived as operators on functionals from Hilbert space into itself. I would recommend perusing the University library and perusing texts on Mathematical Physics and the Calculus of Variations. This will lead you to historical references and the development of the theory in the context of real problems the theory was… [cont.]

A. I recommend there be a slight variation in color. It would look nice if the walls were slightly lighter or slightly darker. Use the same color family, just a different shade.

Is the fourth movement of Beethoven 3 considered a theme and variations?
Q. It doesn't look anything like sonata allegro form to me. It definitely looks like a theme and variations. Is that, in fact, what it is considered to be?
Asked by mellotron12 - Sun Jan 11 04:49:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Thanks for asking a harder one. It is not a theme and variations in the usual sense. It is a hybrid variation form with everything, including the variation theme, being based on a "ground bass". The theme of the ground bass is the pizzicato theme that starts the movement, it runs throughout and forms the basis of the fugato section. The actual theme of the variation portion does not occur until the bass runs through a few times and parts are gradually added above it. A true variation form can be found in Beethoven's variations on God Save the King, or the Diabelli Variations. His 32 variations in c minor are actually a chaconne, based on chords, rather tan a theme, same as the last movement of Brahm's 4th. The 2nd Movement of Hayden's… [cont.]

What is the definition of continuous variations?
Q. What is continuous variations, and other than temperature change, what other physical properties could be used in the method?
Asked by Harmony - Mon Feb 19 19:33:51 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When we talk about variables, we talk about them being 'discrete' or 'continuous'. A discrete variable is a variable that can only take particular set options, like eye colour for example must be brown, blue, green or grey. A continuous variable can take any of an infinite number of values, for example, distance could be 2km, 2.5km, 2.53km, 2.532954km, etc. Temperature change (or temperature in general) is a continuous variable because it could be one degree or 1.5 or 1.53, etc. It's something you measure on a scale. Other physical properties that display continuous variation would include time, distance, mass, energy. Most variables you would use in chemistry are probably continuous in fact. Hope that helps.

What's the reason for thickness variations along a single strand of hair?
Q. What's the reason for thickness variations along a single strand of hair? I just recently noticed these "ridges" (bumps on the hair strand kind of like crimped hair). Is it due to heat damage, malnutrition, hormone changes or something else and how can I fix it? It's really annoying and I've taken to pulling out irregular strands and now my hair is thinning!
Asked by Jo S. - Fri Jun 26 06:10:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you're healthy, your hair will be healthy too. It has to do with everything. Your stress levels (a lot of stress can cause hair to fall out!), your sleep habits (less sleep, less hair growth), heat damage, the shampoo you use, if you condition, etc. I was actually looking it up earlier! A. If you are planning home sales parties, you would want a diversity of products, or complementary partners to join in the program. You might search the web for "private label" cosmetics, skin care, etc. you can purchase fairly small quantities of generic products with your brand label attached. A popular term among the internet marketing gurus is Niche Marketing, it's a lot easier to rank well in search results for hand-crafted-hemp-fashion then for the word Fashion. By being a big fish i a little pond you have a better chance of being noticed, in that small world, if you setup a website wholly focused on body spray, with their term in the domain name in the page title, in the texts and image descriptions, there's a better chance of… [cont.]

A. I wondered about that myself, so I looked it up on wikipedia. Basically they are welded in place while hot, and the only problem is cold weather -- and then they just stretch. Continuous welded rail Most modern railways use continuous welded rail (CWR), sometimes referred to as ribbon rails. In this form of track, the rails are welded together by utilising flash butt welding to form one continuous rail that may be several kilometres long, or thermite welding to repair or splice together existing CWR segments. Because there are few joints, this form of track is very strong, gives a smooth ride, and needs less maintenance. The first welded track was used in Germany in 1924 and the US in 1930 and has become common on main lines since the… [cont.]

Asked by nic - Sat Jun 13 11:07:04 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's funny, I was wondering the same thing the other day. I think that it's just between the same species. Like how humans have different faces, maybe robins (and other birds, etc) see each other's faces as different. I think that maybe it's because it's their own species, they might notice minor differences more than we do...? Now I'll be thinking about this all day, it's so interesting. (:

How do you get color variations?
Q. Hi, I am thinking of breeding Duprasi's and I know that they don't have color variations (yet), since they are very rare to find, how do you g per say breed a new color? In all rodents or animals?
Asked by Kyle S - Fri Nov 30 20:44:18 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Color is genetic what you need is two animals of the same or similar breed that have even the slightest color variation and breed them it is best to start out with at least three (I'll explain later on). The offspring are a key part of your breeding program you must only breed the ones that have good sound bodies and temperments then you pick the ones that have the most color variation. The ones with the most color variation are the ones that you need to breed this is were the third specimen comes into play. At some point you will have to breed back to your starting line it's refered to as line breeding this will strengthen the color diffrence. How soon you can breed back into the line is hard to tell. Rabbits for example should not be… [cont.]

Q. pH variations in different parts of the digestive system are important to the process of digestion because why?? Why are they?
Asked by bralex9428 - Fri May 9 06:03:34 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In your stomach the pH level is LOW (low is very acidic) and the pH level increases as you travel through the digestive tract. Aside from the need to break the food we eat into smaller chemical pieces (i.e. break proteins down into amino acids and carbohydrates into monosaccharides), some compounds in our food are only soluble in the bloodstream when in an environment of certain pH value. pH is a measure of the amount of hydrogen ions (positive ions) in the area, and many molecules react with hydrogen ions and become positively charged or negatively charged. Charged molecules are absorbed differently than uncharged molecules, so the pH of the area will have an effect on the uptake of certain minerals, vitamins etc in different parts of… [cont.]

Variations of homologous genes that result in differences in structure and function?
Q. Variations of homologous genes that result in differencnes in sturcture and function are called what? Are they: alleles, loci, autosomes, dominant, or linked? I thought it might be alleles but I'm not too positive what "linked" means.
Asked by hockeysticks - Fri Feb 29 02:37:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, alleles is the correct answer. For example, if a gene determines the seed shape of peas, one allele of that gene may produce round seeds and another allele may produce wrinkled seeds.
